Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Midwife?

Midwife means "with woman." Midwives have been providing care for women during pregnancy and birth for thousands of years. They are skilled in birth procedures, but what separates them is their personal involvement and caring for their clients. Studies show that women who use midwives as their primary birth attendant have a greater degree of satisfaction with their birth experience.

Some beliefs that midwives commonly share are:

Birth is a fundamentally healthy process with many normal variations.

Birth is a normal part of life, not an illness.

The birth process is best accomplished without interference.

The birth experience belongs to the family, not the birth attendant.

Knowledge is to be freely shared. Educating women is an important part of the midwive's role.

Where will I deliver?

In our practice, our midwife delivers at local hospitals. We feel this gives you the advantage of the comfort and attention of our midwife with the conveniences and security of the technology available at a hospital.

What happens if there are complications with my pregnancy?

Let’s remember, childbirth is a natural process. However, complications can happen. Our midwife can seek the advice of our board certified doctor to determine the best care for both mother and child. In these situations the doctor and midwife will work together to determine the optimum course of care.

If I choose a midwife does that mean I can’t have pain medication when I deliver?

The goal of a midwife is to educate the mother so that she can decide her best birth plan. A midwife is there to support the mother. A midwife can order epidurals or other pain relief as part of the birthing process.

Will I get a sonogram or ultrasound if I choose a midwife?

Ultrasound are a tool to help determine gestational age and to check fetal growth. Many insurance plans include a sonogram as part of the obstetric coverage. Our office are equipped with ultrasounds and our midwifes and doctors are trained to perform such services. Patients are often interested in ultrasounds from a more “recreational” perspective. Our office also offers 4-D ultrasounds for this purpose.
